In the warmer months, Michigan is the perfect weekend getaway for us. For our first warm weather Airstream trip to Michigan, we chose Hoffmaster State Park on Lake Michigan which is just south of Muskegon. This park features spectacular large dunes for which the east coast of Lake Michigan is famous. We have since discovered Ludington State Park and Sleeping Bear Dunes which are more scenic and desirable. Nonetheless, the best part about Hoffmaster is that it is relatively unknown and thus it is possible to get a site on a late summer weekend without booking six months in advance.
Michigan has a short summer and everyone seems to love the outdoors and own a tent or camper. That means you plan ahead or settle for a less desirable campground. Hoffmaster is the best Lake Michigan campground I have found that you can book on short notice. The campground is heavily wooded with a stream that runs through it and connects with Lake Michigan. The real draw of this campground is the proximity to the coastal sand dunes. They form the perfect perch to watch the sunset over the lake. Lake Michigan resembles an ocean from atop the dunes. This will be a place we return to for a quick getaway.
